Digital imaging - tutorial 2

This tutorial focused on digital cameras. It specifically looked at how they are used why they are used and ethical issues behind today use of capturing images.
the world of photography and caturing memories and moments has changed dramatically from black and white photography with heavy cameras dark rooms and films, to having a camera featured on mobile phones a small device people carry with them in their pockets. Purposes for capturing image has come a long way also people used to use cameras to capture important moments or events, now we have many purposes for capturing images such as catching speeding cars on the roads, recording whole events, glamor reasons, capturing moments, sports, and many more. However one purpose remains the same and that is the common occupation of record keeping which is innate to the human species.

"A new technology is rarely superior to an old one in every feature"

Within my seniour years at high school i studied photography. I used manual photography to complete my first portfolio which i learnt many skills and techniques which include using a manual camera and how to create different effects (as you couldnt see the picture immediately) This knowledge was carefully learnt as you didnt want to 'mess uo' a whole film as the process of producing that film took a while so great attention went into capturing the images. I also learnt to develop films and work in a darkroom with chemicals and enlargers which was both challenging and surprising which meant that you were either satisfied and happy or dissappointed and frustrated.

In my second year of photography i embraced the world of digital technology and used digital camera computers and printers to produce my work. This also at time could be highly rewarding but for me a lot of the time frustrating. I still learned new things such as working a computer program and how to put ink in a printer but i never really felt it was me producing the image i just manipulated it and the computer spat it out.

So my opinion behind this quote, - new technology can never give us the same satisfaction as the old can maybe in a different way and a different means but never the same. Is it superior? well i think when it works and becomes comprehensive it has the potential to be. in the photography world its the surprise and the unknown of images i enjoy.

Given the prevalence of of image capturing and distribution using IT, what ethical issues may arise with their use?

due to digital images being so transferable issue have arisen on what distribution is ethically right when it comes to sharing information on others. Here is where crimes such as identity theft and perverted behavior can occur. Exploitation of people is also occurring with images just take a look in a NW magazine or watch entertainment tonight.

Ways digital images are used in OT practice.
In relation to occupational therapy the context is an important for digital imaging. On my first placement digital images were used to capture moments of occasions where great memories are formed. During my second placement i used my digital camera as a way of recording the activities i did with my clients such as baking scones and craft activities outside.

Within a physical setting digital images can be used to illustrate rooms before and after equipment is installed or of clients before and after treatments.

However digital imaging is used in Occupational therapy it is important that we remember to gain consent from clients and monitor how the images are kept to avoid complications with exploitation, client confidentiality.
