The internet and online communities

Face book - This is a site which majority of people both old and young have today which allows them to connect with each other share pictures, personal information and chat to each other. Face book provides many advantages within today's society such as being able to keep in touch and connect with friends and family who live in a different geographical location and friends which we rarely see due to the fast paced and busy lives in which we all lead today. Face book also comes with some disadvantages also. The biggest factor i have found with this website is it can be extremely addictive and for some people has become a way of 'spying' or 'stalking' people to see what they are doing everyday and who they are connecting with. Because Face book allows people to share how they are feeling and what activities they are doing some messages and status can be easily misread and judged inappropriately by others. this leads me to question the saying is ignorance bliss? There are some things people just don't want to know.

Trade me - This is a a new Zealand site which represents online garage sales. Trade-me is widely used within New Zealand as in a way it 'cuts out the middle man'. Manufacturers can sell their products and goods online so it works out cheaper for them to sell and cheaper for the individual buying the product - win win. However due to this people such as car dealers are closing down and have lost businesses due to people selling the used cars online which works out cheaper for both parties (cutting out the middle man).
Trade me can also be addictive for some people as like myself i can spend ages browsing through things i 'might need one day' everyone likes a good bargain and trade me provides this.

Skype - This is an amazing site where you are able to talk to people online and view them(if you have a web cam) This allows families to connect when they live in different Cities which is common fr many of us today. Skype is also a free service so it is much cheaper and economical than making overseas phones calls. Skype also caters for group conversation this allows group to communicate all at once! - will this be the end of catching up over coffee in a cafe?

One major ethical issue which online communities provide, especially the social networking ones and in particular 'chat rooms' is people can be whoever they want to be. Because face book, my space and various dating sites don't cater for physical socializing people can put up false images and display false qualities. These sites allow people to be a completely different person. Shy people may come across extremely confident and older people may appear young. These sites facilitate the ability to be anybody you want to be or to be perceived as.
